4 Keys To Effective Prayer

category: christian living Apr 16, 2024

The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. James 5:16

Did you know that you have the capacity to change things? The Word says that the effective, fervent prayer of a righteous person does much. So, how do we make our prayers effective? There are actually many different kinds of prayer, but I want to give you the main keys to effective prayer. That means that when you pray, you don’t feel like your prayer only went as far as the ceiling, but went into the very throne room of God. The 4 keys to effective prayer can be summarized with the acronym - PRAY.

  • P- Praise and Worship. Begin your prayer with a time of praise. Tell Him how thankful you are for all He has done in your life. Bring back to your remembrance how He has blessed you and thank Him for those things. Then worship Him. Tell Him how much you love Him. Tell Him how good He is. Maybe turn on a worship song and use it as a prayer to tell Him your love for Him. The song above is one I wrote years ago. Use it to get your heart ready to receive from the Lord.
  • R - Righteousness. Pray out of your righteousness. You were made the righteousness of God when you made Jesus the Lord of your life. The Word says in Ephesians 2:6 that He has raised us up together with Christ, and made us sit together in HEAVENLY PLACES. Being righteous means that you have right standing with God. You don’t have to pray in fear like a beggar, but in authority as the Child of God that you are.
  • A - Ask. Ask what you desire, according to the Word of God. Find scripture for what you need and ask Him for those things as the Word directs.
  • Y- Yield to the Holy Spirit. Allow the Holy Spirit to speak to you. Sit quietly with a notebook and listen for what He speaks to your heart. He wants to be known by His children.

I encourage you to pray first thing in the morning if you are able. There is something about that quiet time with the Lord first thing in your day to set the right tone for the rest of your day. So, pour yourself a cup of coffee or tea, grab your Bible, and start your day with the Lord. Your effective, fervent prayer WILL change things.
