10 Ways to Pray for Your Kids

If you've ever stood over your child's bed at night, whispering "Lord, help them," and then wondered if that even counted as a "real" prayer — we want you to know something: it counted. It always counts.

Last week on the podcast, we talked about praying for your spouse. This week, we're turning our attention to our kids. And if you're a parent, a grandparent, an aunt, an uncle, a teacher, or just someone who loves a kid who needs a little extra covering — this one's for you.

Here's the truth we come back to again and again: our kids aren't really ours. They're on loan to us. Scripture is clear that they belong to God, and we're simply given the honor of stewarding them into who He created them to be. When you shift your parenting from "these are my kids, and it's all on me" to "these are God's kids, and He's giving me wisdom to raise them" — everything changes. You stop trying to build little mini-me's and start praying for the tools to raise the person God actually made.

So here are 10 ways to pray over your kids — not an exhaustive list, but a place to start.

1. Pray for Their Heart

Pray for a soft heart, a grateful heart, a protected heart, a joyful and peaceful heart — a heart that hears God's voice and follows Him. This one matters at every age, from toddlerhood into adulthood.

2. Pray for Their Mind

Pray they're quick to listen, that they grow in discernment, and that they can recognize God's voice above all the noise competing for their attention — friends, phones, screens, culture.

3. Pray for Their Protection

Over their heart, mind, body, friendships, and situations. Protection doesn't mean a life free of mistakes — mistakes are often how we learn. But we can still pray for their health, safety, and for good to come out of every circumstance.

4. Pray for Their Faith to Grow Stronger

Dedicating or baptizing a child isn't a one-time moment — it's an ongoing commitment to help them find God for themselves. Let them see you pray. Let them see you read your Bible. Bring them to church — don't just send them. Make Jesus a normal, everyday part of life, not a Sunday-only thing.

5. Pray for Their Gifts and Calling

Every child is wired differently, with their own giftings and passions. Pray that those gifts emerge, that they find godly people to help develop them, and that they grow a servant's heart along the way — because Jesus came to serve, not to be served.

6. Pray for Their Future Spouse (and Current Friendships)

Who your child marries one day may be the most significant decision they'll ever make outside of following Jesus. Start praying for that person now — for their heart, their protection, their walk with God. And along the way, pray for your child's current friendships too; those relationships shape them more than we sometimes realize.

7. Pray for Your Own Wisdom

There's no instruction manual that comes with a newborn — but God has one for each of your kids specifically. Pray for wisdom in how to guide them, discipline them, and decide what activities and opportunities are actually right for them (hint: not everything needs a "yes").

8. Pray for the Fruit of the Spirit to Be Evident

Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). Pray these become who your child is — not just what they know.

9. Pray for Godly Courage and Boldness

Pray they'll know what's right and have the courage to do it, even when it costs them something. The world will throw hard, unexpected situations at them — pray they'll stand firm, knowing the Holy Spirit is with them.

10. Pray for Their Needs to Be Met, Right Now

Not just the needs we can see — the ones only God knows about. And here's a beautiful add-on: this prayer doesn't have to be limited to your own kids. Pray it over the kids in your church, your neighborhood, your classroom. So many children don't have anyone praying for them at all. You can be that person.

It's Not About the Right Words

Here's what we want you to hear: this isn't about how long you pray or how eloquent you sound. It's about your heart connecting with God's heart for your child. You can pray these prayers folding laundry, driving carpool, or sitting on a bleacher at a basketball game. God isn't grading your delivery — He's meeting you in the moment.

And don't underestimate what it means for your child to simply know you're praying for them. It's a comfort that lasts a lifetime.

Scriptures to Pray Over Your Kids

Proverbs 3:5-6 — "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight."

1 Peter 5:7 — "Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you."

Matthew 6:33 — "But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."

In a world that tells us to Google the answers or ask AI what to do, remember: God already knows your kid — inside and out — better than anyone. Take it to Him first.
