Time and Talents
We all have in our possession two great gifts. The first gift you have been given is your talents, something which is unique to you. The second gift is time, which is something we all have an equal share of. I love watching people really excel in their natural talents. You may feel like there is nothing extraordinary about you - like God kind of passed you up on the talent side of things, but that is just not true.
There are talents, such as athletics and musical or artistic skills, that are very visible. However, there are far more hidden gifts on the inside of you. I love watching other really gifted teachers or those that are good at crafting or woodwork. I have enjoyed watching each of my children’s talents emerge and develop. My oldest son Ethan is very talented musically. He also has a great gift for design and now works as a graphic designer. My daughter Callie can play music and sing but has a real gift for making people feel welcome and comfortable around her. She has recognized that gift and is now working toward becoming a nurse. My youngest son Nate is also musical, but his personality is where he shines - he is always happy. That may not seem like a gift, but he has unknowingly used his ability to be positive and happy to help others get through tough times. My point is that God has made these deposits in each person. It is up to you if you will use them or not.
Paul told Timothy in 2 Timothy 1:6, “Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you...” Sometimes we have to be reminded to stir up and use the gifts on the inside of us. There is something unique and special that God intended for you to do for the kingdom of God - even if you think that others are more talented and can do a better job. Learn from others - watch and listen to those who have the same type of gifting. However, you need to understand that although others may have similar abilities, you are unique and can use your gifts in a way that no one else can.
Now, the second gift that we each possess is very precious to us all, and that is time. We all are given the exact same hours and minutes each day, yet have you noticed how it seems that some people get so much more done than others? I have learned that when I give the first part of my day to God through prayer and reading the Bible, the rest of my day goes much more smoothly. Are you a person that sits and watches life pass by, or are you actively taking the time you have and using it to its fullest? Learn to organize and prioritize the time that you have been gifted with. Give the first part of your day to God and watch how He can transform your day.
Paul again says in Ephesians 5:15-17, “See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is.” Be wise with your time and your talents. Start each day with God, and ask Him to bless your day. Then be willing to use the gifts He has given you for Him.
