Keep Your Eyes on Jesus

...let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith… Hebrews 12 1-2
This week my family will embark on a new school year - my husband and myself as teachers and our youngest son as a Senior in High School. As schools start across the country they look extremely different than ever before. No one would have ever fathomed how quickly our world would change in a small amount of time. In fact, it almost feels like some kind of sci-fi movie that we are stuck in.
As a teacher and parent, there is a temptation to feel overwhelmed by the changes. Change is hard, period. However, as a Christian, I can face these changes with peace of mind knowing that the One who is the same yesterday, today, and forever, is on the inside of me.
I will be honest, I have had moments of extreme anxiety as I am facing this school year. Those are times when I let my eyes drift off of Jesus and onto my situation. It is at those moments of anxiety that I realize where my focus has shifted to. Making the correction is simple. I close my eyes and talk to Him, the author and finisher of my faith. It is so comforting to know that He never changes. When my world is uncertain, He is certain. When my mind is flooded with stress and anxiety, He is my peace that passes all understanding.
This year was no surprise to God. He knew that it would be a hurdle in all of our races. God never promised that our lives would be easy. In fact, He says in the verse above (Hebrews 12:1-2) to run with ENDURANCE. It takes endurance to face changes and challenges with grace.
The key is the end of that verse, “looking unto Jesus.” We need to keep our eyes focused (more than ever before) on the One who never changes. He is the rock we are to stand on when the world around us is like shifting sand.
More than ever before, let us look to Jesus every moment of every day. When we are unsure of what to believe, we can trust Him to be the Way, the Truth, and the Life that we seek.
