How To Rule and Reign In Life
Did you know you have the authority to rule and reign in your life? The word reign means to have power, authority, and dominion. Therefore, you can have authority and dominion over every situation in your life.
Romans 5:17 says, “For if by the one man’s offense death reigned through the one, much more those who receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.” Jesus gave us back our rightful dominion on this earth that Adam squandered to Satan. We were created to rule and reign over this earth and God’s creation.
The idea of ruling and reigning can seem foreign to us – especially if we have never been in a position of authority. Those in authority need to have confidence in what they have been given. For example, a police officer knows and operates in the authority he or she has been given when they wear their badge. Without that badge, they are like everyone else.
We have been given the badge of righteousness. Romans 5:17 says that it is a gift – we are made righteous through the blood of Jesus. It is our job to understand what we have been given and to use it.

It’s a Gift
Have you ever been given a gift that you had to read the instructions on how to operate or use it? The gift was yours the moment you received it, but it was only useful to you once you understood the directions and put them into action.
Christians are the same way with their authority. We were all given it as a gift with our salvation, but if we never learn how to use that authority and to have dominion over the devil and every evil principality, it does us no good. We need to know the Word and believe that we are what it says we are; we can have what it says we can have, and we can do what the Word says we can do.
Jesus said in Matthew 16:19, “And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”
Jesus spoke to Simon Peter in this verse, but the truth applies to all who believe that Jesus is the Christ and all things work by and through Him. Jesus told Peter that on that truth, He would build His church. It is vitally important that we know, understand, and practice the authority we have been given.
The Keys to the Kingdom
Jesus said that the keys of the kingdom are in your words. We bind and loose through speaking the Word of God in Jesus’ name. Keys represent authority and power. Having the keys to your house means you can come and go as you please. You don’t have to ask anyone for permission to be there because the keys give you permission.
Jesus is saying that we have been given permission and authority to live in the kingdom of heaven. A kingdom where we not only live but we rule and reign as royalty with power, dominion, and authority.
The key word in Matthew 16:19 is you. You have been given the keys, you have to bind, and you have to loose. And you can do that when you speak the Word of God. We have to take personal responsibility for applying the Bible in our lives.
Smell Like Jesus
Do you like spoilers? Well, I’m going to give you one – we win! We are victorious because of Jesus. 2 Corinthians 2:14 says, “Now thanks be to God who always leads us in triumph in Christ and through us diffuses the fragrance of His knowledge in every place.” We are to diffuse Christ’s victory over the devil wherever we go! In fact, when you walk into a room, the devil should smell Jesus and run in terror!
Follow the Leader
God always (it doesn’t say sometimes) ALWAYS leads us in triumph. Notice that He leads us. If we want to be triumphant, we must follow His leading and not do things the way we want. There is a common saying today that sounds good but misses the mark by a long shot which is, “Follow your heart.” I know it sounds correct, doesn’t it? But the truth is, our hearts and minds can lead us astray, especially if they haven’t been renewed by the Word of God. We’re to follow GOD, not our hearts. I don’t know about you, but my heart can sometimes be very selfish.
However, if we follow God and are found in Christ, we will always find victory. That doesn’t mean our lives are a bed of roses. 2 Peter 5 tells us that the devil lurks around like a roaring lion seeking his next prey. But when you are found in Christ and diffuse His fragrance, the devil will smell Jesus and flee, knowing he has already been defeated. So, take your authority and rule and reign in your life today!
