Giving an Account of Our Words

The truthful lip shall be established forever, but the lying tongue is but for a moment. Proverbs 12:19

If there is anything I'm not good at, it's lying.  I have never been good at it. You only get good at the things that you continually practice, and I've never practiced lying. Some people are really good at it. Satan is practiced at it. He's not good at it, but he is practiced. He never speaks the truth because it's not in him. Every time he says something, it's a lie.

We had a young man stay with us for a week while his parents went on vacation. I really did like this kid, even though I couldn't trust what he said. It was exhausting trying to sort out fact from fiction. I finally had to sit him down and make things simple. The new rules were very simple- everything he said was a lie, and anything that broke was his doing. By the end of the week, he was speaking the truth because he was tired of having to prove himself.

God watches over every word we speak, and we will one day give an account of those words. That bit of knowledge right there keeps me from running away with my words and speaking what I shouldn't be saying.
