Therefore, humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. 1 Peter 5:6-7
I believe one of the telling acts of trust is putting something you really care about into the hands of another. I remember the first time that I left my child in the care of someone else so I could go to work. It was one of the hardest things I have ever done. I hadn’t cared about anything as much as this little baby, and the act of giving him to someone else to care for was almost too much for me to handle. I’m surprised I could drive myself to work through my tears.
I think that is how we sometimes treat our worries. We feel that we are the only ones who can carry them – like somehow our worries are equal to our love. Who are we to think that our worrying adds any value to anything? Isn’t that what Jesus said in Matthew 6:27, “Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?”
Worrying has absolutely no value. It is actually prideful to hold on to your cares. That is why this scripture says to humble yourself. When we cast our cares on the Lord, we simultaneously place our trust in Him. The result is a peace that passes your understanding. You give God the chance to work out whatever you are worried about. He will also provide you with wisdom and knowledge if something should be done.
I encourage you to cast your care on the Lord and leave it with Him. It will feel awkward at first, but the more you do it, your trust in Him will grow.
Dear Lord, I cast my care on you today because I know that you care for me. I trust that you have the answers that I need. Amen.
