Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9

You have probably heard this verse a million times – you might even have it as a decoration somewhere in your home. The truth of this verse brings us comfort to know that God is with us wherever we go. However, is this something you know or something you believe in yourself?

God is, of course, with you wherever you go. But I think when we read this verse, we read it a little selfishly - like wherever I choose to go, He is with me. However, let's back up and put this verse in context. Verse 7 says, "Only be strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law which Moses My servant commanded you…8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success."

There is an if/then statement made here. If you follow God's Word, you can be strong and courageous, knowing that you are in the will of God. He will honor His Word when you trust in it and walk in it. That is a very different picture than doing your own thing and expecting God to be with you no matter what.

Yes, God is always with you as the Holy Spirit dwells in you. But there is the power to be strong and courageous when you abide in Him and His Word. You can have courage because you follow Him – what He tells you to do and go. That is where trust comes into place. You have to trust that His way is better than you could ever hope or imagine. Trust in Him, abide in His Word, and be strong in Him today!

Dear Lord, Your Word says that I have nothing to fear when I follow your Word. Let your strength and courage rise up in me today. Amen.
