Called To This
Finally, all of you be of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, be tenderhearted, be courteous; not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling, but on the contrary blessing, knowing that you were called to this, that you may inherit a blessing. I Peter 3:8-9
Boy, it’s hard to not retaliate or treat people the way they treat you, especially if they haven’t treated you kindly. I once had a job where I was the only Christian on staff. The atmosphere of that workplace was less than ideal, and the way I was treated was harsh. Every time I was mistreated, I had a choice to retaliate with the same ugliness that was given to me. I tried my best not to say anything in return, but I had been pushed a little too far one day. I knew I shouldn’t say anything, but I did. Of course, the result was more harsh words coming my way.
I was angry as I talked to God about what had happened. However, He reminded me so lovingly that I knew better. They didn’t. He told me if I wanted to see change occur in my co-workers, I had to ask them for forgiveness for what I had said. God then showed me how walking in love would break down the walls of negativity they had built. So, I did. I asked for forgiveness for what I had said and purposed to walk in love. Long story short, the atmosphere of that work environment started to change. Not only that, but I had opportunities to lead them to the Lord and show them what being a Christian was about.
If I had continued to return evil for evil, I would have never had the opportunity to show them, Jesus. Sometimes, we have to swallow our pride and see the big picture. Remember what Ephesians 6:12 says, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” That verse will put things in perspective real quick.
The only enemy we have is the devil, and his job is to get you to abandon love. He knows that if he can get you to return evil for evil, he has made the power in us through Jesus null and void. Don’t let him set that trap for you. See the situation for what it is and choose to walk in love – no matter what.
Dear Lord, help me to see people and situations with spiritual eyes. Help me walk in love and the blessing of that love today and every day. Amen
