The Covenant of Blessing
I will make you a great nation; I will bless you and make your name great, and you shall be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you, and in you, all the families of the earth shall be blessed. Genesis 12:2-3
The blessing of Abraham is something we should be acquainted with because God made the first covenant with His people through Abraham. The dictionary defines a covenant as “an agreement which brings about a relationship of commitment between God and his people.” That commitment is something we need to be knowledgeable about and understand.
When Adam and Eve were in the Garden of Eden, they had everything they needed. God didn’t leave anything out in their provision. Most of all, it was a place where they had a personal, intimate relationship with God. God would come and walk with them in the cool of the day. Can you imagine?
When Adam and Eve decided to disobey God’s commandment, that relationship was broken. Therefore, God made a commandment with Abraham to provide a way to bless His people. That covenant, in turn, made way for Jesus to come and finish the covenant – to bring us into that close relationship with God once again.
Although we have been restored to our original state of being righteous (having right standing with God) through Jesus, we can still fall away from the blessing. As with Adam and Eve, disobedience breaks the blessing from working in our life. Disobedience to follow the commandment of love will short-circuit the blessing.
You are one of the families of the earth that this verse is referring to. As a child of God, you are blessed in every way. Take full advantage of the covenant we have with our Father. Obey His commands and walk in His blessing today.
Dear Lord, thank you for the covenant you made with Abraham and fulfilled through Jesus. Thank you for making way for the blessing to be available to me and all who believe in You. Amen.
