My Refuge
I will say of the Lord, "He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust." Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the perilous pestilence. Psalm 91:2-3
What picture do you get in your mind when thinking about a fortress and place of refuge? I imagine a castle that is fortified to withstand attacks from the enemy. Perhaps it has thick stone walls built high on a cliff for a long vantage point. Whatever the picture you have in your mind, God is greater!
When we are found in Christ, He surrounds us like a shield – an invisible barrier of protection that keeps us safe. Paul reminds us in Ephesians 6:12, "For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places."
Because we are fighting a spiritual battle, we need spiritual protection only found in Him. When we put on the armor of God, we can fight any battle the enemy throws at us. Not only that, but our verse says He will deliver us from the snare of the fowler. The enemy's schemes will be revealed before we fall into his traps.
It kind of reminds me of the old Pac-Man game. If you ate the "power pellets," the ghosts couldn't kill you. Instead, you, as Pac-Man, could kill the ghosts. Well, when we are in Christ, it's like being super-charged with "power pellets," called the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit gives us the power we need to take back what the devil has stolen from us and make him run in terror just like those Pac-Man ghosts.
We need to remember who we are and whose we are. Take time to read the whole 91st Psalm and think about our safety in the Lord.
Dear Lord, thank you for being my safe refuge and fortress. You surround me as a shield. Therefore, help me to trust You with my whole heart. Amen.
