Count It All Joy
My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. James 1:2
There is no doubting that courage is needed when you are going through a trial in your life. However, why would we want to count it all joy?
The Webster’s Dictionary defines joy as “the emotion evoked by well-being, success, or good fortune or by the prospect of possessing what one desires.” If you take that definition of joy, this verse really doesn’t make sense. There isn’t any good fortune in trials. Therefore, this definition of joy must not be what this verse is about.
Joy is part of the fruit of the spirit you receive when you make Jesus your Savior. It doesn’t rely on good circumstances to manifest. But instead, it is a powerful force when things aren’t going as you desire. When I have experienced this joy in my life, it doesn’t feel happy. The emotion that I have experienced because of the fruit of joy is peace. It is a calm assurance that God is working on my behalf, and I don’t need to worry or fear what I’m going through.
Nehemiah 8:10 says, “Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.” God’s joy will strengthen you in the middle of a trial. Again, It’s not being happy about your situation but knows that God is making a way of escape.
It boils down to having faith in God and trusting that He is with you. The reoccurring theme of being able to be strong and courageous is knowing that He is with you. He will never leave you nor forsake you. Think about the God of the universe, the One who hung the stars and created everything is with you. If you give your situation to Him (cast your care), He will work things out for your good. (Romans 8:28).
When you start to think about God working things out for you, the emotion of joy will soon manifest. God is so good! He will never leave you in a trial, but He is always there to help you through. Praise His Mighty Name!
Dear Lord, thank you for the calm assurance experienced with You in my life. I trust You and know that You are working all things out for my good. Amen.
