A Strong Foundation

Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken. Ecclesiastes 4:12

This verse is commonly used at weddings to describe marriage with God at the center. It’s easy to understand that everything is stronger when God is weaved in the fabric of our lives. The key is keeping Him at the center.

I would like to tell you that it’s easy to keep God at the center of all you do, but we all know that isn’t the truth. Our lives are busy, and if we don’t intentionally and purposefully put God in our lives, it doesn’t happen on its own. He is a gentleman and will only go where He has been invited.

Bryce and I were young when we got married, and people expressed concern for us. However, spiritual maturity has much more to do with success than physical maturity. We both were not just Christians – professing Jesus as our Saviour. We had each made Him our Lord, our Father – the One we looked to meet all of our needs. As we looked to God and built strong relationships with Him individually, we automatically grew together as a couple. God is our foundation that nothing can shake us off of.

It comes down to building habits in your life personally and as a family to stay strong in your faith. Create personal habits of daily time with God. Create weekly habits of going to church together weekly. Make these things a way of life, so you don’t have to question if you “feel” like it or not. Then seek God in any situation that comes your way. Matthew 6:33 says to seek God first, and everything you worry about or think about will be taken care of.

When you put these things into practice, you, your marriage, and your family will be stronger and have more peace along the way.

Dear Lord, show us how to seek you first in our lives and family. Thank you for strengthening our relationships when we put You in the middle. Amen.
