Be Humble and Kind

Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion. Romans 12:16

Many arguments would never have the chance to even start if we would adopt the wisdom found in this verse. Everyone has an opinion. Social media is littered with opinions about politics to parenting. We feel it is our right to let the world know what we think about any topic. And although having your own opinion has its place, it should never be used to make you feel better or worse than anyone else.

The amplified version of this verse reads, “Live in harmony with one another; do not be haughty (snobbish, high-minded, exclusive), but readily adjust yourself to [people, things] and give yourselves to humble tasks. Never overestimate yourself or be wise in your own conceits.” As I said, we should never feel or act higher or lower than anyone else. That way, you keep the healthy balance of being humble yet confident.

That is the best way to approach any relationship in our lives. We are to love and serve others just like Jesus did. If anyone had the right to think of Himself higher than others, it was Jesus. Yet, He remained humble and approachable and came to serve, not to be served. Jesus is the Name above every name, yet He gave His Name for us to use and walk in the same authority He had. Jesus deserves all of the glory and honor due to Him, yet He calls us His friend and joint-heir of God. We would be wise to adopt His mindset and how we interact with others.

None of us would claim that we are right about everything, but are we willing to admit when we are wrong? Are we willing to learn and grow from others? Are we ready to serve and not be served? As the song says, “Always be humble and kind.”

Dear Lord, help me love and serve those around me with a humble heart. Amen.
