Unequally Yoked

Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness? 2 Corinthians 6:14

The choice of who you marry is THE most important decision you will ever make aside from the decision to make Jesus the Lord of your life. We taught this to our children and preach it to whoever will listen. The person you marry will impact every area of your life, whether you like it or not.

That’s why a verse like this is in the Bible. There are different ways to be unequally yoked, but this verse talks about Christian and non-Christians. Marriage is a covenant relationship where two become one. Like our verse says, “what communion has light with darkness?” Light and darkness don’t mix – you can only have one or the other. When a marriage does take place between a Christian and non-Christian, the result is usually bent toward the non-Christian. The faith of the believer wavers and becomes weak to the constant struggle.

To prevent this from happening, single believers need to have high standards in who they date. It’s not enough for someone to profess to be a Christian either! It should be evident that their first love is Jesus before you start to date them. Don’t buy into the lie that guys or girls like that don’t exist anymore. They do. Just be patient for God to bring the right person into your life at the right time. Follow Jesus to the best of your ability, and when you’re following His path, He will bring that special someone your way in His timing.

If you are already married to an unbeliever, don’t feel condemned or discouraged. Just stay strong in your faith and keep believing for your spouse. God can work and turn any situation around. He cares for your spouse and loved ones more than you do. Be faithful to God, and He will be faithful to you.

Dear Lord, I pray for my friends and family who are unbelievers. Help them to see and understand your love and grace for them. Amen.
