Never Stop Learning

If anyone thinks he knows anything, he knows nothing yet as he ought to know. 1 Corinthians 8:2

The longer I live, the more I'm convinced of two things. 1) I never stop learning, and 2) The more I know, the more I don't know.

Being a musician and playing an instrument is a great way to enforce these two facts. I thoroughly enjoy playing the bass and I do have fun doing it. But I have learned there is always something new to learn. Every time I learn something new, it opens up a different area I didn't know existed. It might be a new "lick,” different fingering, a different position on the neck, or a completely different sound. As these new areas open up, I find myself being not as good as I once was. That sounds weird, but it's true. As I try new ways the sound suffers. But as I keep practicing, the sound gets better. I pretty much know what a bass can do, but I want to know what it is capable of doing. I really enjoy listening to musicians who are constantly pushing the envelope of possibilities.

This is true in all areas of life. I endeavor to know more today than I knew yesterday.
