His Love is Not Based
"He who does not love does not know God, for God is love." 1 John 4:8
It was my privilege to attend a concert last night. It was a festival with different bands performing. There was a man there who was a member of a Christian motorcycle group. His son was the frontman for one of the groups performing. It was obvious that the son did not share the values of his father, but the love that flowed from that dad toward his son was so pure and unconditional that it captured my attention. Every song the son sang was more vulgar than the one before it, and there was a kind of evil that he projected. The dad stood at the back of the stage, smiling the whole concert, recording every song on his phone. Every ounce of his being was in love with his son.
You cannot separate God from His love for you and me. His love is not based on who we are; it's based on who He is. Now, I can tell you with first-hand knowledge that He doesn't like everything we do, but God is able to separate the who from the do and love us in spite of ourselves.
