A Simplified Law

In vain they worship God, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men. Matthew 15:9

Have you ever noticed that anytime man gets involved in rule-making, things can go bad pretty fast? God presented man with ten laws to live by. However, that was too broad and simple for those in power, so by the time Jesus came along, they had over 1000 laws to live by. The problem with that is you become a rule follower instead of a God follower. Jesus really simplified things by reducing the law to two laws that satisfied the requirements of the whole law. Man, once again, got involved and started to insert laws to "help" us to live a righteous life.

I grew up in a church like this. Following God was reduced to a list of "don'ts". Trying to legislate righteousness through laws just doesn't work. Following laws doesn't make you righteous, but following Jesus does.
