A Steadfast Heart

He will not be afraid of evil tidings; His heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord. Psalm 112:7

As I was thinking about this verse, the word steadfast seemed to jump out at me. To be steadfast means to be firmly fixed in place. In other words, immovable.

It reminds me of the events we sing about every time we sing the National Anthem. Francis Scott Key wrote the poem initially titled "The Defence of Fort M'Henry." Key wrote about the flag still standing throughout the night of the bombing. What he couldn't see at the time was the base of that flag. Men used their own strength to keep the flag standing. When those men died, other men were ready to take their place. Many men sacrificed their lives that night as they stood steadfast to prevent the flag from falling, which would signal defeat. A cause more significant than their lives kept them from leaving their post.

What a picture of steadfast hearts and a picture of how we are to be with God. The men's resolve to keep their post was greater than the fear of death. I believe they had a vision for what that moment meant for history.

What about us? Do we have a resolve to stand steadfast in faith? Faith believes in God and His Word despite what it looks like. It's looking at the facts and boldly speaking the truth of what God says about your circumstance. Maybe you've been diagnosed with cancer, and fear has tried to grip you. Stand steadfast in faith, speaking what He says about it, "By His stripes I AM HEALED!" (1 Peter 2:24). That's how you can be strong and courageous no matter what evil tidings come your way.

Dear Lord, thank you for the truth of Your Word in my life. I will stand steadfast in faith today! Amen.
