Promote Health

There is one who speaks like the piercings of a sword, but the tongue of the wise promotes health. Proverbs 12:18

Did you know that you have the power to promote health in others? No, it’s not by dragging them to the gym and slapping bad food out of their hands (although that might help too). But what comes out of your mouth has the power of life or death for yourself and those you speak to.

Have you ever been around someone who seemed to suck the life out of a room? Their negativity and ugly words left you feeling terrible. On the other hand, have you been around someone who gave you hope and encouragement? Where they leave you feeling joyful and blessed? I certainly want to be classified in the latter group!

What about the words we speak to ourselves? If we spoke to others the way we talk about ourselves or even think about ourselves, we wouldn’t have any friends. No one wants to be thought of as fat, dumb, clumsy, forgetful, etc. Yet, we are careless with the thoughts and words we project onto ourselves.

Remember that our words have the power of life and death. Proverbs 18:21 says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” Make it your goal to promote live-giving words wherever you go. Yes, we sometimes have to have difficult conversations, but those can still be done with the wisdom of God and in the spirit of love. Be wise and promote health with your words today.

Dear Lord, help me have wisdom with my words and speak words that promote health to others and myself. Amen.
