Enjoy Life

For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come. 1 Timothy 4:8

At first look, one may think this verse proves there is no need to exercise. Nice try! It says it profits little because your body lasts a short amount of time compared to your spirit, which will live forever. There’s no getting around the importance of exercise.

Let’s face it, it’s true what they say, if you don’t use it, you lose it! We have to work to maintain our muscle tone, balance, and flexibility, which all will start to deteriorate if we don’t work on them. Of course, the benefits of exercise reach far beyond those things. It helps your mood, energy, and mental capabilities as well.

Here’s the thing, bodily exercise and godliness for your spirit and soul are not mutually exclusive. Every part of who we are is connected. My physical body has a lot to do with being obedient to what God has placed on my heart to do. I need the energy, strength, and stamina to complete my assignment. Therefore, I exercise so that I can do what God has called me to do. We all have a calling on our life from God. And someday, we will stand before Him and answer if we fulfilled that calling or not.

The other part of wanting to exercise is to simply enjoy life. I love being able to go on beautiful hikes with my husband and kids, and I enjoy trying new activities. Jesus came to give us life and life more abundantly, but we can’t experience and enjoy all He has for us if our bodies are weak or in pain.

Now, I know there are situations – sicknesses, illnesses, diseases, and disabilities- beyond our control. I’m thankful for the blood of Jesus and His mercy to heal and help us. If that is you, I want to encourage you to do what you can do physically and thank God every day for His healing power working in your life. Remember, when you do your part, and God does His part, you will be unstoppable!

Dear Lord, I ask you to help me on my health journey – especially in exercise. Help me to have the right motivation and determination to take care of my body like You would have me do. Amen.
