Speak It, and Live It

I watched a movie once where the main character made a promise to God for help in getting out of a bad situation. This happened to be a comedy, and it was entertaining to watch but painful at the same time. Some people almost make a career out of making promises they have no intention of keeping.

Ananias and Sapphira were two such people. In Acts chapter 5, people who were believers were selling their possessions and giving the proceeds to the church body. Ananias and his wife Sapphira conspired together to sell their property and give the proceeds to the church; only they kept part of it for themselves. The property belonged to them, and they had every right to do with it as they pleased, but they lied about it. They wanted credit where credit wasn't due, and it cost them their lives. To my knowledge, this is the only time this ever happened. Let me be clear here, I'm NOT saying you will die for not keeping the vows you make!

We tend to make promises to get out of trouble and then forget them when things are better again. I can say with certainty that God doesn't see the humor in this. Be careful what you promise, but if you speak it, then live it.
